dieself engine into gasser shell?
« on: July 10, 2007, 12:45:06 am »
dont know if this is the right sub forum but.
has anyone swapped a diesel engine into a gasser shell?
im thinking about swapping the diesel from my 82 jetta into my 84 gti..
i really dont wanna deal with the whole car harness and fusebox, was hoping someone might know if there was a way for me to hook up the very few electrical parts of the diesel, to the existing fusebox of a gasser..?

any help, or point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

all you really need is the fuel stop solenoid (12v ignition) and GP relay (also 12v ignition)

the extra's like sensors etc aren't required, but would be nice...

if you want a real ghetto drop in, just drop it right in, hook the fuel stop solenoid to a 12v ignition source, and hook the gp's up to a manual button... leave em on for about 5-10 seconds max when the temp is 20C or above.  for low temps leave em glow for max 1 min otherwise you might burn them out... (the switch should be a beefy one unless you choose the right way and run a relay)

It's one of the easier swaps out there.  Going diesel to gas is much harder.  Basically you just delete stuff, and like J said, only need to add the two circuits to get up and runnning.  Make sure you flush the fuel tank well.

oops yea forgot about the gas thing... i would say drive the car till the tank is really empty, then fill it up with some diesel.  when priming the diesel pump, use a vacuum pump and get a can.  in this can just keep sucking fuel out (about 1 good litre) then start her up, drive to the diesel station and fill her up.  a little gas doesn't really hurt the old pumps, but a little diesel sure does hurt gassers

its really not all that good to mix these fuels at all for either application gas/diesel. so try to get it all out. pretty easy install as mentioned. just get the lump in, get fuel to it and the main electrical lines. there are other posts on here about this.

I'm doing a TDI swap in a Corrado at the moment.

The trick to a nice easy conversion is to use the same platform for donor and patient. The Corrado is virtually the same as an A3 Golf, and so the TDI engine wiring plugs straight in to the Corrado fusebox. Take out the 16V loom - put in the TDI loom.

So if you're going from A2 to A2 then you should be able to swap just the engine loom straight over without any cut and paste. Iirc the Golf / Jetta has two looms - one for the engine & sensors, and one for the lighting and aux bits & bobs.

Fuel tank etc should also swap over, although I'm flushing mine and just putting a diesel sender unit in it.

Good luck  :)

On mk1s the glow plug relay is seperate from the fusebox so that should make it a bit easier. Need some pictures of a diesel harness?

(corrados were available with a 16v and even a 8v NA in europe)
