Tranny bolt pattern question
« on: January 09, 2005, 02:56:16 pm »
I may have asked this before, but does anyone know if the TDI bolts right up to an IDI tranny? Specifically, are the bolt patterns the same?

TIA, Stan

Any 4cyl tranny will bolt onto the early 1Z and AHU engines. I'm guessing that the ALH engine is the same but I can't confirm...

Thanks...I was pretty sure that any VW 4-cyl inline engine has the same bolt pattern.

BTW, how about the single-head V6 engines? Is their bolt pattern the same?

Thanks! Stan

I have not actually seen one, but there was a thread on tdiclub a couple of years back that indicated that the VR6 and VW/Audi inline 5 cylinder engines had the same bolt pattern on the trans end.  Note this I5 and VR6 pattern is not the same as the four cylinder pattern.

As far as I know, all the modern VW four cylinders share the same trans end bolt pattern, the 2004 BEW PD engine is the same as a 1980 1.5L IDI Rabbit engine.

I say modern VW four cylinders because there was a early 2 L four cylinder used in the early 1970s era Audi 100LS (and the tooling later sold to AMC here in the US) that I have never gotten data on.

Thanks Piper! That matches what I have read since posting...that the I4 and VR6 engines have different bolt patterns. Stan

quick Question about bolt patterns again...
i want to put a 6 speed tranny onto my 1.9 diesel golf (93).  i know that some come on newer VR6 (mark 4)
-- did VW make any 6 speed manual trannys for mark 3 or earlier? and would a newer 6 speed tranny from mark 4 fit my diesel motor (with regard to bold pattern etc)

also would you recommend this or would the diesel ware prematurely?
would this be an ideal way of lowering RPMs at higher speeds?

Thanks! :)

Also, the 6-speed came on US Jetta GLI models in the MK4 I believe. It was coupled with the 1.8T from what I recall putting a 6 speed cable shift tranny into the mix of compatible sets for our engines.  Now you just have to convert to a cable shift.

Good stuff, Mikey! :D

Do you happen to know the ratios in the 6-sp?

O2M 6-speed:

1st:  3.42
2nd: 2.11
3rd: 1.48
4th: 1.15
5th:  1.17
6th:  .97

Final drive for 1st, 3rd and 5th:  3.88
and for 2nd, 4th, and 6th:          3.10

The VR6 02M is basically the same, a few minor ratio differences but not much.

Also, the 180 hp Audi TT 5-speed has an 02M tranny also, but with a spacer installed in the 6th gear slot, making it just a 5-speed.  Strange but true.  :P

My guess  is that the transfer case for AWD only bolts up to the 02M tranny, and so instead of re-engineering a transmission for the "value" TT, they just took out 6th gear.  The final drives are the same for both of them, but the 5-speed has different ratios on the gears.

One of the techs at the dealership I used to work at took apart a trashed 02M for the fun of it, amazing engineering indeed.  So much of it is based on the old 020 design it's staggering.
