Right then,i thought i would open the fuel tank and look for dirt, this is a mk1 golf or rabbit,i removed the fuel sender unit and looked inside,i found this

Nice little filter covered in crap and bits of old filer neck,i removed it with a bit of welding wire bent into a hook    its nice and clean now and the tank is clean so i should be ok.

Yep... those things get clogged up.  I had to clean mine out this past winter as well.

(pic links are down now that hostdub is temporarily out)

I thought I had read that some dealers recommended taking them out altogether in colder weather areas, but I'm not sure...

If it were me, I'd take it out. I have a separate inline filter before my lift pump, then my Racor before the IP. I mean, what is it's purpose anyway, except to keep out big rust chunks, which any filter can do.

Probably to prevent any cloggin of the fuel lines.

Isn't it possible to fit the MK2 plastic tank under a MK1? I hate metal tanks.

so where is that thing located?? INSIDE the filler neck??
I run Biodiesel so I KNOW I'm eventually going to have to replace that thing, but it'll probably be a pain in the ars   .
I'll add it to my list of Winter things to do   !

Oh and jimfoo; can you post pics of your setup? I'm thinking of running a redundant filter anyway.
Thanks!

The filter is inside the tank, remove the level sender and its just under it,the top bit is visible so just make a hook and pull it out
