growl... a lesson: look before you bolt...
« on: April 09, 2005, 03:29:06 pm »
Sigh.  Put my transmission back in my Rocco a few days ago, today was getting around to cleaning up some things in the engine bay, putting the timing belt back on, fixing some wiring, attaching throttle and clutch cables, etc... when I noticed that the clutch lever felt "funny", like there was no resistance.  I could feel the return spring that is in the end cone of the tranny, but couldnt feel it hitting the engagement point.  Hmm... After some testing (to no avail!) I think I put the god forsaken @&#$*$% #$@&% @&#&% pushrod plate in backwards.  I think I was so worried about getting the right timing marks on the flywheel in the right place I completely forgot to check what I was doing.

I'm going to try and do a "monster garage" style transmission extraction tomorrow and see if that is what I indeed did.  Thankfully I dont have everything under the hood back in place and some of the tranny mounts arent bolted all the way in yet.  Grrr.  At least I dont have to completely undo all of the work that I did today, and if all goes well, I should have the tranny back in the car tomorrow.

Morale of the story?  Check stuff before you bolt everything back on!

Sheesh, I didnt even drink any beers while I was doing it....

Maybe if you had, you woulda put the backwards part on double backwards and turned out all right!

Learning the hard way just means you won't do it again. Look up "learning the hard way" and you'll see a picture of me. Not funny at the time, but it helps ingrain a good base knowledge and a certain amount of "doublecheckedness" in the way you do things. (like my new word?)

Ok, so I'm a dumbass.   Yes, I did double check the clutch assembly before I put it back together.  No, I didnt double check the clutch cable when I installed it weeks ago.  I had adjusted it all the way down for some reason to make it easier to install???  and never adjusted it back up.  So what I was feeling in the pedal was just free play.  Doh!!!  After kicking myself, I adjusted up the cable and everything is hunky-dory.

Oh well.  Good thing I didnt tear the tranny out for nothing!

I feel your pain
Last year my Son and I replaced the tranny in his 16v Rocco and found out the hard way about the larger input shafts on 16v gear boxes. After we were all done and bolted up, it would just sit there making terrible grinding noises
Had to pull it again and use an 8v clutch plate, won't make that boo boo again  :!:
