Seeing as this is dumb question week maybe somebody can enlighten me about a '93 VW Golf turbodiesel. What is the difference between it and an 87 model? Same engine I presume but some differences?

may or may not have EGR and or CAT...

its a 1.9TD of course you knew that...  as far as i know the suspension is interchangeable other than some bushings of course (i've installed mk3 struts/springs on my mk2 jetta but with mk2 strut bearings...) 100mm axles as opposed to 90mm axles (some MK2's did come with 100mm axles apparently though...)

the pump should have some extra features on it for altitude compensation etc... they can be ripped out or disabled... just check out smogs faq... if they dont come with extra features oh well no issues!

other than that, you can stick an '87 diesel into a '93 golf, or a '93 golf TD into an '87 jetta/golf...

i'm pretty sure the transmission still uses the mechanical speed sensor for the spedometer... someone else can chime in on this to be absolutely certain though.

hope that helps...

Thanks, JT, for that info. I thought that I had bought a '92 with the 1.6 for parts but I checked the door frame a couple of days ago and it looks like an early '93. That means that it is the wonky cranknose 1.9. Seems to me that they had soft camshafts too. You know that it wasn't running when I bought it and all I did was give it a quick look under the hood to make sure it was all there. I will have to think about this now.

You should post a picture of it. MK2s and MK3s look very different from the outside.
BTW maybe I'll trade you engines or something

Remember...one man's junk is another man's treasure.

And my junk drawer in my work shop has gotten me out of more than the occassional bind.

Doug, I'm sure you'll be able to use your purchase in one form or another.
