1.6 NA intake system re-engineering
« on: May 19, 2007, 10:23:13 am »
Let's get this straight:  The cross sectional area of each individual runner to the cylinders is not equal to the cross sectional area of the snorkel coming from the airbox.  Actually, it's just over 25% of the sum of cross sectional areas.  From an engineering standpoint, this leads to a greater air *velocity* (not flow rate) while making a larger head-loss (lost mechanical work).  Maybe it's this way to increase laminar air flow...
Now, I'm not even suggesting that I'm a better engineer than those at VW (actually, I haven't even graduated) but my intuition says that the air box should be re-designed such that the intake to the air filter is larger, thus reducing head loss and increasing flow rates.  Coupled with a K&N (if they exist for the motor), this would really make some high-end HP gains.

So you are saying someone should do something like this?

Keep in mind that VWs needs are not your needs. They needed an intake that provided enough air but still kept things quiet. With the larger intake you will get more noise. Yes they do make K&Ns, I have one that I actually might sell

It's a 4 cycle motor with 4 cylinders, only one cylinder is in its intake cycle at any one time. Regards

yeah that snorkel was to quiet it up, not to make it more powerful. aside from the snorkel design, i really feel the na intakes a pretty well suited for best performance.
