With people pushing up the power levels I have seen the reccomendations a few times for the use of a Girdle.  There was a recent link to Bildon that had a nice looking main girdle:

http://www.bildon.com/catalog/DetailsList.cfm?ID=049.198.601.MBG&Nav=6

I e-mailed them and asked if they would offer a discount for a group buy.  They said yes, if 5 were purchased.  It must have been late in the day because they did not tell me what the new price would be :? .  I have another e-mail into them requesting that info, and how they would work the group buy.  I will post that info as soon as I get it.
I was wondering if there might be any interest, depending on price of course.

I'm interested... but the $400 dollar price tag scares me a little. I'm sure there's a local company who can make these at a fraction of the cost.

I don't think this is a good girdle at all, to be really effective you need to machine all the main caps flush with the block surface so the girdle really has some contact area, I don't think those little spacers are really going to help make your block any stronger at all.

Thanks for the input Dave.  Do you by chance know a qualified machienist with knowledge of high performance diesel engines that could make any thing like this?

So to be effective, you need the block out, assemble the caps, measure, remove, grind, reinstall caps, check that everything is flat/flush, and then install the girdle?  Should you have a torque plate installed up top to take any flex into account?

So this is not just a bolt on addition. Sound like you need to have a good shop local for the prep work.

Which brings me back to my main question, once the prep is done, do you know someone who might make a better product at a better price? Hint hint.

It just so happens a certain shop I know just got a CNC mill, also just so happens he hired a very qualified CNC programmer...

But yes you are right, the main caps need to be machined down, you could probably do it without sending us the engine, just send the caps. I just got the go ahead on a compound turbo 1.6td so we'll be giving it a whirl on this one. I'll be sure to report back.

Looks like this is a no go.  Perhaps we should look into our group for a maker.  Andy2, Dave at PP etc.
