1.6 idi oil dipstick tube leak
« on: May 11, 2007, 02:35:51 pm »
I had posted about this a week or so ago in an improper section.  I trust this is the proper one?  In replacing a coolant hose I had this idea that if I pulled the dipstick tube from the sump I could access the hose clamps better.  Bad idea.  In removing the tube, I had to bend it a bit to clear the injector lines.  The reinstall is a PITA with the bracket bolt being under the injector pump and the tube MUST line-up exactly to re-install.  Being bent, the tube would not seat in the hole in the block (it takes an O ring and a washer) and it leaks if it is not seated perfectly (duhhh).  I ordered a new O ring and washer and I installed the tube after having to reapproximate the original bend in the tube AND having to cut about an inch off the distal end of the tube so it would allow the O ring to seat.  You guessed it.  It still leaks a little but I did get that ---- bracket bolted back on.  My next move is clean the site well and use some filled epoxy around the point where it enters the block.  The point of all this is:  Don't disassemble anything you absolutely don't have to - because it'll come back to bite you.   :x

I also had a problem with the dipstick leaking. I used a RTV type sealent and it worked wonderfully.
