lip worn into drive axle flange
« on: December 31, 2004, 07:57:51 pm »
Changed the drive axle flange seals on my AGS.  One on the driver's side is still leaking with the new seal.  Noticed when I took the flange out that a groove had been worn into the metal flange by the seal.  Just put it back in again and hoped for the best.  Best didn't happen, now as I said it is still leaking transmission fluid.  So, anyone out there in Ontario have a driveaxle flange that would fit an 88 Jetta with AGS transmission that they don't need?  There's a case of 12 of your choice delivered to your door if you have one.
88 Jetta TD....sold for $1000, bought an 06 Cobalt, clearing out the diesel jetta stuff now

Take the flange out (again!) and take the flange and the seal to a good bearing shop. There's got to be a few in Toronto, because there's two in Chatham. Get an oversize seal with a wear ring, comes as a kit. You'll wind up with a thin sleeve that is almost a press fit over the worn spot on the flange (Should come with the tool to push it on).  Pretty standard fix to a worn shaft. The only question is, is it available in the size you need? That's why you need to take the parts with you, so they can take some measurements.
