As well as the tips provided so far, I would suggest that you check the static timing (belt, crank, cam, pump) and replace that timing belt and idler before you make anymore high rev cleanouts on the fuel system. If you throw the belt you won't have much left to work with. These things will run forever except for those that are not serviced in this way. More good engines went for scrap than you could count just because people were neglectful of the timing belt.

Oh hey; I'd forgotten about this thread! haha
Anyway, my friend ended up getting this car (just cuz my b/f convinced me I didn't really need another VW  :roll: ), but anyway, he's continued to have this sputtery/bad idle issue.

When he asked me about it a few weeks ago, I asked him if he ever changed the fuel filter; he said NO. So um, until he does that, I am not going to bother with any other suggestions  :roll:  duh!  :wink: That should have been the first thing for him to check! Bah; stupid guy :P haha
