Either your dealer didn't know what you were talking about or he is a thief.  Those things are only 15CDN at my dealer.  I"ve replaced both of mine so I know this for a fact.

I know the ditterent plastic version cost no more than $15 from the dealer, but the aluminun one must cost that much I guess ,they are not interchangeable anyways.I wonder why or how did the aluminum one crack :? ,You would think it would have been better than the plastic one,Did it freeze up :?:

My brother owns an 89 1.6D Golf as well.  He has the plastic flanges on what I would assume is the origional engine.  I can not find a price on the metal ones from www.altrom.com but most of their prices are the same as OEM VW stuff.  I've heard there aftermarket parts are actually VW and Volvo OEM parts, they are just in different boxes.  They've got Bosch rally and fog light kits for 150-200CDN. :)  That's probably less than what you'd pay for them on a new car.

ya i think it froze, because it happened on the coldest day of the year and i can't think of any other reason why it would have cracked. When i tried to start it after i put the part on it was firing in all cylinders so thats a good sign.

p.s. i had two people call me tonight about wanting to buy it  :D
