I'm the one who was looking into the 5-cyl TD/Vanagon swap. One of the hurdles I ran into was the different bolt pattern on the crank of the 5-cyl engine making for an incompatible 1.6 4-cyl pressure plate/flywheel. Also, as far as I know they never imported the manual transmission version of the 82 Audi 5000TD into the US so tracking down a compatible flywheel/pressure plate may prove difficult (though the 5-cyl gasser quantum may have the same bolt-pattern, don't know for sure).
I ended up selling this engine to a fellow down in Medford, OR who was looking into to putting it into his 5-cyl gasser quantum.

I believe the TD engine in the Volvos was the same Volkswagen 6 cyl engine as powered the VW LT trucks in the 1980s, like this one (LT trucks never made it to the North America market):

I think these Volvo (VW) TD engines were all 2.4 litres, and would use the same transmission housing pattern as the 5 cylinder engines - IIRC, they're more or less just a 2.0 litre 5 banger with an extra cylinder tacked on the end.
cool i am intersted in seeing how the 6cyl can be modified in the oiling aras to make ot dependable?...i have a big 12mm plunger VE pump from a cummins engine that i could use for the 6cyl engine..would be cdool in a syncro wagon!? can body ever find out any info on 2338 ? he had emailed looking for a older cummins pump for his vovlo last year but i have since changed computers and may have lost his email..i might have it on a old cd if i saved it..so maybe some one can find something for us ...?

Wow, small world, the one I am buying was sold to the present owner by a guy named Justin. What can you tell me about it, I was told it was in "running condition" , but steve had few other details about the motor specifically.
This place has clutches for the Audi motor in question, only $150 as well, Steve told me that the 5 banger gasser and the Audi TD have the same bolt pattern on the flywheel, same input shaft, etc...
It's kind of funny that another syncro wagon popped up for sale on
www.vwdieselparts.com at the same time. It's a different year though.
