Exhaust/intake studs
« on: December 15, 2004, 10:30:55 am »
Just a quick question. I don't have any studs for my exhaust or intake. I guess when the PO had the head replaced the shop didn't bother to put them in.  Where can I get them?  It is just held on by bolts instead of studs and nuts. I'm going to pull the head off and tear back into my engine due to excessive oil consumption.  Also is it easier to pull the head on a 91 Jetta TD by removing the intake and exhaust manifold first? Or should I just leave it all attached and take it off that way?
Thanks

I'd venture to guess that the easiest way to remove the head would be to pop the clips off the downpipe connection and pull the whole thing off as one. And there are only studs on the exhaust manifold. The intake is held on with allen bolts from the factory. The dealer can sell you the studs if you can't find them anywhere else.

a good hardware store or bolt supply house will save you some $$ on the studs, I get mine at my local 'True Value', they even stock the 7mm bolts needed for inspection cover replacement (I'm impressed)
