Correct me if I'm wrong but that is a Thing?
Yeah I guess it is a bot off from a Thing

Been trying to get ahold of one for a while now. Un-frikkin-stoppable in the winter!
Hello Dr. Diesel,
Look no further, there are three of them here, built by Bombardier for the military, supposed to be full time 4WD, apparently these can be registered,

Ever since the Germans pulled out of the training base at Shilo MB, there have been tons of them here in Manitoba including one done up in a really disgusting puce color,.....
Looks like a 181 Trekker crossed with a 88" series III 1/2 ton Lightweight Land Rover "air portable" and an old Merc G Wagen.

I have a bit of a soft spot for all three.
A friend imported 3 German Iltis a few years back. (3 fit in a container)
He got them registered in Canada without too much trouble. I can tell you they are quite a blast to drive. I think its a 1.7 gasser, but it had about the same get up and go as the toyota 22r powered 4x4 I drove at the time. Good ground clearance, locking diffs, waterproof ignition, pretty cool little jeep-toy. Audi quatro drive train I believe.
The canadian army has surplussed virtually all of them now. they are definatly older, but the kicker was a few of our soldiers getting killed by driving over an IED over in Afghanistan. There was a lot of bad press about how unsafe they were and that generated enough political will to finance a fleet of mercedes Gwagons to replace them. lightly armoured, so they must be much safer than a ragtop VW. I dont begrudge the soldiers those tax dollers at all.
So, there are lots of these Candian built Bombardier Iltis on the market now, but I have heard it is actually harder to register them than an imported one as they are all sold with 'off road only' on the title. Dont know if that is true or not. I think one of these would be a great home for a AAZ or TDI. Some of the later model german ones came with a VW TD in them.
