Hello!
Have a couple questions on an '87 1.6 turbo diesel. (no owners manual)

First, what weight oil does this thing take? 10w30? 15w40? all it states on the valve cover is a certain specification.

second, How can I tell if this is an "eco diesel"? and what is different about this motor.

I have taken over someone elses engine swap project and as such have inherited a basket full of.... well, problems.

Hi!. Just picked up an 87 NA myself. 15W40 says the manual. It's what I run most of the time (just retired a '92 with 526,000 on her). However, I use synthetic in the winter (summer here is 4 months of bad skiing). Depends on who you meet. Some switch, some don't. What ever makes you comfortable. Just use a quality oil and a quality filter.

Uses the same oil as the truck

Now to cross reference a bosch oil filter number with a fleetguard one...

Make sure it is diesel oil and not gasser stuff.

If it is an eco diesel the pump won't have the "spaceship" (LDA) or the hose running from the top of the pump to the intake manifold. An ECO will also have a K14 instead of a K24. ECOs also had cats

Well, it does have something that looks like a spaceship on the pump as well as a small hose running from the intake to the pump.... No idea what a K14 or K24 is though, I'm guessing turbo, I still need to get up to speed on that stuff.

So, what kind of damage could/would result in running a cooling system with no expansion tank, nor any way for the water to expand? :oops: So far it has meant a blown hose and judging by the number of new hoses in the engine bay that has meant quite a few blown hoses... (keep in mind this is a swap that I didn't start)
I would guess head gasket? what else?

I dropped about 2 litres of oil out of the pan the other day and was relieved to see it wasn't milky but was troubled by the lack of oil. I need to get this thing running again just to see what is happening with it.

All your speculations are correct. You really should get the proper expansion tank and all that crap. I can probably set you up with all the parts you'd need but you may also be able to find them locally.

I'd be worried about the lack of oil as well
