VW T3 1.6 TD syncro (JX Code)

134k Miles.

Just bought it.

Ran like a sack of sh!t, uber slow, no guts.

I did a bit of surgery...

The engine has had new timing belt and tensioner.
Cam timing now 100% bob on.
Pump timing set to 1mm lift at TDC
LDA was disabled when I go it, so this has been rectified.
Valve clearances were miles out, these have been reset.
Injectors were shafted, again they have been replaced with re nozzled items, good spray pattern, even breaking pressures.

Now it starts and runs, performs a million times better than it did, when I bought it the pump timing was really advanced.

Now, from cold it struggles to start without the cold start lever pulled out, once it's warm it's fine, just for a couple of minutes on a morning it smokes like a labority beagle.

Now, im tempted to wind the pump timing forward a bit but I don't really want to go over the 1.05mm recommended for this engine.

Not having much experience with worn injection pumps, does this sound like a worn injection pump to anyone as I have checked everything else!

the pump on my old gtd wore out due too petrol contaminated fuel (it was free) and it caused poor hot starts and lack of power, cold starts were fine but pump head was worn out, hope this helps mr brick.

I had to run 1.15-1.20 mm lift on my last 87  non turbo 1.6 the injection pump was so worn out it would miss fire at idle with anything less, the mechanics around here all thought the engine was toast but it always had good compression numbers when tested so I ran it with lots of advance. The engines don't usually start well with the cold start lever out, start it with the lever in then pull out once running to smooth it out. That car also returned ridiculous fuel economy with all that advance, like 3L/100km on some road trips (make any Smart Car owner jealous!) but averaged 4l/100km.

Cheers for replies.
Been busy hence lack of responce.
Re: Compression, you know what it's like, one of those jobs I was meant to do when the injectors were out but I pot tested them and decided they were that knackered that they would be the root of my problems, seems not entirly true.

I think once I have swapped the viscous coupling this week then if I get time I will wind the pump timing forward a tad to see what happens.

What happens if you go too far?

Mates got a recent recon SB pump he can't seem to shift, and the truck is a single cab pick up so the increase in height of the upright LDA won't make a *** of difference, so I may chuck that on.

Dunno if it's related but the turbo (K14) doesn't seem to want to do much below 3K but it's returning good MPG.

Had 5 mins spare to have a nose in the engine bay today.
Fuel screw looks to be screwed most of the way out, I gave it as much as I could but it just smokes it's nob off.
Something deffo amiss with the pump, I fear someone has been playing and made a pigs ear of it.
1/2 a turn in made it idle at 3000 rpm, went like f**k though but left black sooty stripes on the road and ma-hoooosive black clouds everywhere!

Scarey over steer!

Well, here it is..

Not measured it yet but I reckon there is now 12" of ground clearance, bit scarey blatting around corners with the remoulds wanting to do nothing other than go in a straight line!

Okay.
Checked pump timing, it was a tad over advanced.
Dunno how, I checked it 3 times before I nailled the bolts up, anyway, it was out.

So, I reset it to 1.0mm lift @ TDC.

It starts worse, it misfires and puvvers smoke out, but the smoke is darker than before.

I runs like a sack until you give it a good couple of hard revs, it's almost like a petrol engine "choking up" from having too much choke.

The engine shakes like billy-o.

There are clouds of smoke down the road!

Once warm it's a bit flat, no excess smoke, a bit but nowt bad, struggles up hills, but a bit smoother and quieter than before.

Depressing the throttle half way on cold starts doesn't make a *** of difference.

Gunna check compressions when I get a minute, but I think the pump is ready for a bit of loving!

Faulty DTI !
It's sticking.
reset again, then stuck a set of glow plugs in, 3 working, one not, some dubious.
Much better, not 100% but much better.
Not had chance to re check it yet.
I think it is drawing air in somehwere, maybe front seal as it's faine after a short while, it's just like it's got a load of air in after it's been stood..

Gunna try another pump when I get 1/2 hour..

Still starts like it's pulled in a load of air, but after a minute it's fine.
Goes better too.
New DTI arrives in the week.
