I just want to get some ideas on what other people are doing about the hood release lever that sticks out the front grill of the 79 rabbit...... I'd imagine in 79 autotheft through the hood wasn't that common..... times have changed..... are you guys cutting the latch? Relocating the latch to be pulled from the inside?? Or just leaving it? Just wanna see what's the best idea for taking care of this.... thanks!

Hmm.. Interesting Idea... that Might work....  Im actually planning to Install an alarm with a hood sensor anyways, but the fact that the lever sticks out and anybody can just come by and pull it bugs me.....  I was thinking of cutting the lever back so its behing the grill and attaching another means of releasing it..... maybe a wire and some pullys welded into place somewhere?? HaHa! I dunno...

DON'T CUT IT

you can sell that latch for like $50-$75 on vortex. You can swap the entire "normal" hood release from a rabbit into your car, just drill out the rivets

there's been some guy's who put leads in the gas tank door.. just connect 12v to it and it opens the door (in case the battery is dead etc..)

pretty neat idea huh!  I may do that as I will be shaving my doors.

Maybe I was thinking of something else... I just looked on vortex and most sold for $20-50 shipped. Still not a bad deal though

the outside pop latch was only on base model rabbits and usually on older ones.  i've only seen them on 1980 and older rabbits

I have a '79 with the same latch.  Get a hood spoiler (grill spoiler?) and it won't be visible any more.

I prefere the original latch, don't need to open the door if you have an urgent desire to putz with the engine.  just hide it

Most people probably don't know what a hood latch is anyways ;)

If you want to make your car real secure, do like my dad did.

He mounted two switches inside the wheel well.  The first one killed the injection pump solenoid.  The second one closed a contact between accessory power in the horn.

If switch one is off, the car will not run, unless someone jumps the battery to the solenoid.

If switch two is on, as soon as you juice up the accessory power to run the car, the horn will not stop.  Po' man's alarm system.
