Pump compatability question: 1.6na into a 1.5?
« on: March 07, 2007, 09:38:07 am »
Did Bosch make any changes to the injection pump when VW moved to the 1.6L na engine? I'm looking at getting another pump from a 81 Rabbit parts car to rebuild and place in my 80 Dasher.

Also, what should I expect to pay for a pump from a parts car, and what should I look for (there's two of them)?

Dunno about changes, since neither manual really gives pump internals specs, but if anything it was probably a change in the diameter of the pump plunger and head. Maybe a camplate change? Nothing too serious, I'm considering putting a 1.6TD pump on my own 1.5 when it gets rebuilt with a turbocharging setup in mind.

Also, places like car-part.com are your friend, I've discovered...

They are quite different in timing and probably advance curve as well.  There is even the fabled "Yellow Dot" 1.5 pump too.

I put a 1.5 pump on a 1.6 once and had to use alot of initial advance to get it to idle smoothly.

Its probably because the 1.5 and 1.6 have different dwell angles.

This also means that if you put a 1.6 pump on a 1.5, you'll be out in the long grass again on timing.  Probably have to retard the beejeepers out of it to get it to idle, and the who know what happens when you go up in RPM?  Probably not something you want to do on a performace engine that has no piston cooling.

I've asked Giles twice through Email if he would build a pump for me if I sent him a good 1.5 pump and a 1.6TD pump.  I haven't got jack squat back from him.

So I guess i'll get 1.5 pump and have some other reputable pump rebuilder do a full rebuild, and then attempt to put the LDA top from a 1.6TD pump on it my self.

I'll be researching this further in the near future and post what i find.  Just don't have the time right now to do it justice.

Cool, that gives me enough information to know I shouldn't buy a pump off a 1.6 and expect it to be an easy thing to swap out.
