fuel pump leak

Hello folks...............................hoping you can shed some light on a injector pump leak. 1990 Jetta TD, original pump and i'm the original owner of the car.
Leak is coming from what looks to be some sort of vent contraption on the right hand side of the pump (if you were to face the front of the car), up on the top portion of the pump. This "contraption" is covered by a rubber boot.
Man-o-man that is a poor description.........................take a look at the following pics for more accurate info - circled in red.
What is behind this vent? An o-ring, seal? Anybody else have a leakage problem here and how did you resolve? Help me!!!!

the fuel is coming from a cross pin in the LDA.
there is an o'ring that needs to be changed but it needs a fuel tech near
you.
or u can always send it to me.

mine is leaking there too and all I did was run 5/8 hose from the vent to below the oil pan so the fuel doesnt leak onto any coolant hoses and I just let it flow. Soon enough I will get a new pump.

You're likely going to start springing more leaks with the ULSD now that's in common usage.
I'd just get the whole pump rebuilt and be done with it.
I priced out the Vancouver area shops, and they weren't much cheaper than a Giles performance rebuild. Make sure you get a firm ETA on when the pump will be done, everyone's backlogged, probably due to the ULSD changeover.

Thanks for the replies all!
Libbybapa, I checked out your thread and decided to check the governer mod thread. From there I went to the link posted
http://home.comcast.net/~vwgtd/vepump.htm and saw a few pictures....

I also found a site with the same part number for the kit that Named Tintin gave.
http://www.dieselsend.de/800159teile.shtmlI think the first two diagrams are of the same pump?
Which o-ring is the one in concern?

hi guys
the o'ring in question is position #1 on the Zexel diagram.
can't find that o'ring on the Bosch pic.
here is the part # if u guys want to do it yourselves.

i have them in stock at all times as now with ULSD fuel they are all
leaking very soon. it's part of a full rebuild.
all the later pumps don't have screws on the side of the pump to remove
the fulcrum lever cross pin they have ball bearings pressed in.
a little bit of a problem for the DIY'er.
after u need to drill and ream the hole 8mm and then install plugs.
hope this helps.
like someone else said if it's leaking there then all the other seals are
going to leak very soon too.
as for putting a hose on the fitting it's not a good idea as the fuel will
erode the underneath of the rubber boost diaphragm and make a hole
i've seen it many time before.
so get it fixed right ASAP.

Definitely get the pump rebuilt, all of the o-rings and seals are dried up and if you fix 1 leak then another will show up in the near future. ULSD really makes the old pumps leak. Also while you've got the thing off its a good time to modify!

Recap shows that the pump top needs to be removed.
Libbybapa,
By top of the pump did you mean the aneroid part of the pump?
Is this seal replacement able to be redone with the pump on the car?
Does anyone have any pictures of the fuel pump opened up?
Thanks to all!

son of a gun!
My pump just started leaking from the same spot, guess it's time to do my taxes so I have $$ for giles to do a pump and redo some things on the car.

Yesterday I was getting a drop from that area every 10-15 seconds... today a whole minute not a single drop.
You may ask what did you do? 1qt Brake fluid to 11gallons diesel. I hope it slows the leak down for alittle while so I don't have to carry my extinguisher with me and be paranoid.

hi,
all the later pumps don't have screws on the side of the pump to remove
the fulcrum lever cross pin they have ball bearings pressed in.
a little bit of a problem for the DIY'er.
absolutely, i have just completely disassembled my old pump, that leaked at the same point.
its a little tricky to get the balls out, i have hammered one towards the inside until the first ball came out, the on the axle until the other is out.
after that i taped a M8 thread..
greets, michael
remember: ist not fun, when your pump falls to the ground with the plunger removed..but its working again
