M-TDI turbo recommendations needed.
« on: December 30, 2006, 09:32:50 am »
Hi guys,

I'm building up a M-TDI swap for my 82 n/a diesel Rabbit Pickup and I have a couple questions.  First the details:

Pump: Cummins 4b pump (12mm head, LDA from a Peugeot pump, governor assembly from a VW pump (with the governor mod already done), cut down VW timing piston so timing advance isn't limited, and a VW timing spring.  Cummins 4B DI cam plate)

Nozzles: thinking of ordering PP764's from Kerma

Compression ratio: stock (for now)

Other notables: decent size intercooler, external oil cooler, egt and boost gauges.

What I want from the vehicle: not a daily driver, but will see frequent use.  Occasional towing duties (dollying A1 VW's up from the U.S.).  I'd like a combination that provides good all around driveability, with minimal smoke, but able to accept a heavy foot for some fun.  I'm not drag racing the thing, but I hardly ever turn down a stoplight race challenge or cat-and-mouse games on the highway.

Did I go too radical with my pump?  Any drawback (other than rpm limit) to driveability?  Nozzles?  (too big for limited smoking for "normal" driving?)

What turbo would complement this setup?

Thanks!

Mark.

That's what I'm asking!  Is a stock 1.6TD turbo going to be ok, or should I go bigger?

Thanks,

Mark.

for what you want to do...it'll be fine :) Boost will be up around 20psi or more if you want it... 20psi efficiently and the low end spooling won't be hurt like it would be with a larger turbo... the balance seems pretty good :)

Digging this one up- I'm in the market for a turbo as well.  It looks like I have scored a 1.6TD manifold, so what turbo will bolt to it?  Also, what is the model of the garrett 1.6TD turbo?  I hardly ever see k24's anymore but what garrett should I be looking for?  I see t3/4 hybrids all day on ebay, would they work at all?  This will really only be a "shakedown" turbo, something I can get the car running with and then later swapping out.  So yeah, good used cheap would work.  :)  Thanks for the suggestions.
