1980 Rabbit 1.6D:
* 3-notch (1.4mm): 068 103 383 FB
* 4-notch (1.5mm): 068 103 383 FC
* 5-notch (1.6mm): 068 103 383 FD

1981 Rabbit 1.6lD 11mm headbolt:
* 1-notch (1.4mm): 068 103 383 ES
* 2-notch (1.5mm) 068 103 383 ET
* 3-notch (1.6mm): 068 103 383 FA

81-84 Rabbit/Jetta 1.6 solid lifter 12mm headbolt:
* 1-notch (1.4mm): 068 103 383 FL
* 2-notch (1.53mm) 068 103 383 FM
* 3 notch (1.61mm): 058 103 383 FN

1986 Jetta 1.6 hydraulic:
* 1-hole (1.53mm): 068 103 383 EH
* 2-hole (1.57mm): 068 103 383 EJ

The 11mm headbolt Vanagon CS engine code did get a unique head gasket:
1980-85 Vanagon 1.6 11mm headbolt (up to CS 000 338):
* 1-notch (1.4mm): 068 103 383 AT
* 2-notch (1.5mm): 068 103 383 ET
* 3-notch (1.6mm): 068 103 383 FA

Engine code JX:
* 1-hole (1.53mm): 068 103 383 FE

1.9L

It looks like VW just changed their rating system (number of notches) because the thickness stayed the same, only the suffix on the part number changed

Looking at the part numbers they all end in 383 except for 3 of them, where it is 838, is that a typo?

what about tdi?  i've been wondering if i could just use a tdi head gasket on my 1.6

Well if the TDI head, at least up to AHU, fits an AAZ, and an AAZ gasket fits a 1.6, then a TDI gasket fits a 1.6 as well.

Are all of the CS blocks tapped for 11mm headbolts? argh. I assumed it was a 12mm engine.  Why would they do that- Vanagon engines are chronically overstressed.

yeah  but what about the AHU gasket not having prechamber reinforcements??? that's the only difference I can see between the two engines....

just to add some redundancy (grabbed from brick's website)

1 notch - 1.53mm thick to suit piston protrusion of .66mm to .86mm
2 notch - 1.57mm thick to suit piston protrusion of .87mm to .92mm
3 notch - 1.61mm thick to suit piston protrusion of .93mm to 1.02mm
