Hi all, just figured I'd mention that my JX Vanagon is now rocking an
EGT gauge, and I have a few observations and questions..
Also, excuse the redundancy for those who read the Vanagon diesel group too, I posted the same thing over there..
I have the isspro R3607TR gauge from eguages.com with a thermocouple
/probe and 20' extension cable for under 150 for everything shipped.

http://www.egauges.com/vdo_ind.asp?Type=Pyrometer&Series=EVA_R&PN=R3607TRI have the probe mounted right over the turbo inlet in the exhaust
manifold (I run the true TD Vanagon manifold and turbo, like a quantum
- and a k14 charger).
-Fuel is bumped a bit (maybe a 1/4 turn), no other mods.
-I have the Waste gate blocked all the way off and the BOV disabled.
-I am not intercooled (yet)
-only smokes on WOT, and not that much
Observations:
Firstly, wow these gauges are instant to react, as soon as you have
your foot into it, it's climbing.. foot off, sinking - very fast response.
I notice that when cruising around on flat land at 65 or so, I'm
running 800-900F.
When I pull a sort of long hill (1/2 mile 5% grade) starting from
highway speed at WOT it really doesn't go above 1050.
If I pull the same hill from a dead stop at WOT, and run it out of
gear on every shift (to redline pushing 15-16 psi) I get it to eek up
near 1200 but it never passes 1200 (this is when I am really flogging it).
Questions:
Is what I am seeing normal?
Am I at a fairly conservative setting?
What is a safe sustained pre-turbo exhaust temp for the 1.6TD?
What is the max burst safe temp?
Thanks for any and all comments..
