Quickie Exhaust Q
« on: February 06, 2007, 08:35:46 pm »
I have a friend in need of help on his Mk3  Turbo diesel Jetta,  I still need to  go up an inspect the car,  see  whay hes loosing power.  The shop he had it fixed at  fixed the Crank key,  IP,  and head gasket,    but when it was put back together it make barely any power.

The main things that I have thought of was IP timming,  but he told me the shop timmied the pump.......   (  maybe they  screwed something up)

Next is Turbo,  maybe the turbo is shot or  locked up...... (  not sure till I get there)

next is motor timming, I hope to god it's not off  but it may be an issue

Also  could be fuel filter or Injectors

But I need to know if I can open the wastegate completly, and just run it NA,  I have pulled K26 turbos apart, and the oil flows arounf the shaft almost making a barrier between the shaft and the housing and the bearing shell, so I believe this can be done.

That would be the easiuest solution if the turbo is fiked, because the wastegate is really close to the manifold if I believe.

Then I can run a line from filter housing to the intake.

I think that the wastegate is too small and you will still have the turbo spining...Im not sure though...if the turbo is messed wouldnt it be better to just find a used one and replace it..shouldnt take longer than a day to do....

Why not just plumb in a boost guage temporarily, any guage that reads to 15psi will do. The wastegate on K03 equipped 1.9's has a vacuum line to open the wastregate during EGR operation (even though the car may not have a complete EGR system), its possible that the solenoid wiring near the pump was left unhooked or the vacuum lines misconnected and the wastegate is being pulled open all the time. To test simply pull the vacuum line off the back of the wastegate diaphram and see if the power returns.

that is definitely a nightmare...

the bentley lists 0.90mm timing on the 1.9 IDI's... or even lower... something like 0.80mm??? bring that baby up to like 1.00mm at least.  and she will open right up!!

shot turbo... hmmmm doesnt sound right.  unless your buddy ran low oil, or drives the piss out of his car, and overboosting will do it too.

did you check the boost yet on a gauge? I would think it would be more along the lines of an injector or two... and fuel filter.
