turning up d24t volvo... and introductions
« on: January 18, 2007, 03:58:27 am »
Hi just wanted to thank everyone for the awsome info available here. I've been looking for info on making power with the d24t and didnt come up with anything till I found this site. So, my project/daily-driver is a 84 760td w/ 216,000 miles on the clock (rebuilt at around 160000 or so). Im waiting on my egt gauge, but im planning on intercooling, diy pump mods, and more boost of course. My question is about reliability. If I keep exhaust temps undercontrol it seems like everything should be fine, right? My one concern is the stock turbo. If I'm making 15-20psi boost will the tubine speed kill my turbo? I don't know if its ever been rebuilt, but I dont think so. If I do kill it  any suggestions on a good quick spooling replacement? Any estimates on turbo life or anyother info/concerns would be greatly appreciated.
Dave

I know you didn't ask about this, you might already have it figured out.

The Volvo 900 series intercoolers will fit around your larger radiator. It will still take some fabricating for the piping, but it will fit. It took me awhile to find this out, so I thought I'd share it with someone whom it might concern. Good luck with the D24 tuning. Keep us posted.

I thought noone cared... :) This is helpful information, I got myself a 740 gas intercooler and of course it dosn't really fit.. :( My wife is getting tired  of the me spending money to make our old volvo fast (we are building a house and have many more important things to spend money on, according to her anyway) so I decided to go with what I have. I installed it upside-down where the ac condenser was but piping is going to be very ineffecient compared to my original plan (still working on that part). I was planning on installing it basicly like a gas intercooler setup with an electric fan out of a tuarus pushing air from the ac condenser area (to allow space to move the radiator back). Anyhow thanks for the intest. No one has any input on overspinning the turbo?

Oh I care, finding info on this engine is tedious. You've gotta kinda juggle info from Volvo and VW. We're kinda stuck in the middle, and it's rare to boot!

I'm no expert, but I think the D24T and the D24TIC (intercooled) had the same turbos. The Garret T3, if I remember correctly. I hear that the D24T's relies on approx. 11 psi of boost with the dump valve set to open at 12 psi. The TIC engines operate at 13-14 psi and dump at 16-18psi. So I believe the turbo is up to the challenge. I'm planning on running 18psi with mine once I get it up and running. Any more and I'm not sure my gasser intercooler will take it. Hope this helps.

I just finished rebuilding my D24T, rebuilt engine, resealed injection pump, rebuilt turbo, port and polish etc.  The turbo is bigger than the vw t-3's, it has a lager turbine and compressor wheel..it should be able to flow 25psi boost with no trouble.
