I went to hunt down the reason for my non-op tach today and I found some clues and a couple more questions:
Clues:
The "W" terminal has a white plastic connector insterted into it, with no wire connected to it. I tried to remove the connector so I could see how to properly connect a wire, but I couldn't get it to budge.
Coming out of a harness of other wires that go to the alternator, I found a red wire with a black stripe that had been cut-off.
Hypothesis:
I'm assuming that this red and black wire is for my tach and that I need to connect it to the W terminal.
Questions:
Do I have this right? Is the red and black wire for the tach?
If so, how can I connect it to the W terminal?
Anything I'm overlooking/ should know?

If its the same as my Jetta then yes, the red wire w/ black stripe is for the W terminal. Some alternators have the W terminal on the housing but the guts don't support it. That may explain the white plastic piece you were talking about.
You're correct.
The RED/black wire IS for the tachometer
Don't know what the white plastic thing is except
that it may be the plastic insulation for the 6.3mm
female blade connector.
If so, you should be able to pull it off the alternator
