i bought a gauge cluster off someone on vortex, from a 97 tdi, pluged it into my 93 golf td, tach pins at 6000 rpm, obviously not getting hte right signal or something, anyone know if it's possible to get it working in my 93? AFAIK it worked fine in the 97.
If not, i have a cluster for ssale, 97 Jetta tdi, 0-140mph with km in small print
The TDI derives its tach signal from the ECU. Your TD gets its tach signal from the alternator, the two are not compatable. If you exchanged the tach "guts" from your old cluster to the new one you should be able to make it work.
If you just want the MPH guage face then save yourself the trouble and just change the face. Lots of info on the vortex about how to do this.
that's the thing, my old cluster did not have a tach

Yep, I got the same problem as I fitted a 1995 1.9 TDi MK3 cluster in my 1991 1.6 IDI GTD.
TDI cluster looks the same but are not comatible with IDI TD.
You can use 2.0 OBD II cluster in an 97.5-99 A3 TDI, the only think is missing glow plug warning light.
I presently using euro model gauge cluster in my TDI, it's from
Seat IBIZA GT TDI 110hp and it wasn't plug'n'play.
