Boost issues on my IDI
« on: December 21, 2006, 01:44:56 pm »
hey i guess ill toss this up for some discussion.

my setup

-JRC 8" new style Front Mount intercooler
-2.5" mandrel charge piping
-2.5" silicone reinforced couplers
-Garret T3 from an early mk2
-2.5" mandrel downpipe
-3" mandrel downpipe-back straight exhaust
-injection pump adjustments
-mk2 #51 boost pin
-open turbo
-Kinetic Motorsport MBC
-ACT Heavy duty clutch and ACT street disc

the issue is that i build more boost every gear so my max boost is different in every gear

1st - 8 psi (really short gear)
2nd - 14 psi
3rd - 18 psi
4th - 22psi
5th - 27 psi

it pulls like a train but i would like to find a solution to this issue. I was thinking of replacing the stock external gate with a large aftemarket unit

nice ride!
the first gears usually are not good for making boost as the turbo doesent have much time too spool up.
how did you "open" your turbo?
and how does the boost reacts?when you press WOT does the boost comes all or keeps rising steady to its max at red line?

open turbo is just refering to not running any intake or filter

the boost hits at 2900 in each gear but only holds the amounts above

That'll be fun for a little while, but once your engine has been bored out with grit and all the blades are eroded off the compressor the performance will suffer...

As for the boost, I would check out the wastegate and make sure it isn't hanging open a bit. The engine loads presented in the higher gears will generate more drive pressure, so a turbo with a partially open or leaking wastegate would tend to make better boost in the higher gears.

how can i do that in my car?
my boost keeps rising as he rpm rise...at 3000 only see 1 bar.
is it because i have the hole where starts the pipe going to WG open?

on other side open turbo is not that good for your turbo...
do you feel that much of an improvement running without filter?
