I followed this procedure to tighten the head stretch bolts on my 92 Eco:
http://www.vwdieselparts.com/chead.htmI haven't run it yet, but it says to re-torque the head bolts 1/4 turn after bringing it up to operating temp. Is this really necessary? Anybody not applied the additional torque? Thanks.
would like to know as well..
i did my headgasket, put about 20 miles on the car so far...getting a little oil weeping from the rear of the HG. Would have done this sooner, if I had known to. Hopefully the HG isnt going to complete shat out and will still seal somewhat.
I just did one and didn't retighten it up. Fine so far, probably 500 kms on it.
I did mine how the bentley manual says and I have oil everywere, it doesn't drip much though.
I don't know where its coming from though. The IP and valve cover gasket leak so its probably not the hg causing this. Is it really necessary to buy new stretch bolt every time? I will next time I take the head off because I didn't push the torx down into the bolt all the way and it slipped. I got it to hold long enough but I'll have to drill the bolt head to get it off.

aye..i dont know that i'd do that... try a bolt extractor first...the set from Sears has come in handy hundreds of times at my shop
I was going to post the same question today.
I did the headgasket on my 82 Rabbit and I tightened the bolts (new) following the Haynes manual:
30 ft.lb - 40 Nm
44 ft.lb - 60 Nm
55 ft.lb - 75 Nm
Then with a breaker bar, I tightened an additional 1/2 turn.
I started the car, and started very well, I let idle until it reached the operating temperature.
I removed the valve cover, and start to torque the 1/4 turn, when I was doing the first bolt, it make a LOUD POP, and the breaker bar seemed to skip a little ( tought the bolt broke) but it didn't, then I said to myself, "That's it!"
I'm going to leave like that.
The engine start and runs very good, I didn't see any leaks so far, then my question is the same as yours
