• I've got my guage dialed in and I know what I need to do (advance timing by .3 mm from the current setting <69mm>). Im having a problem trying to figure out how to actually advance the injector pump. I've been finding tons of posts mentioning timing adjustment, but call me stupid, looking at the pump there's 5-6 bolts/nuts that look like they could be adjusting screws of some sort.
  
  So how do you advance/ retard timing on these pumps?
  
  I have a shop full of tools, but I am unfortunately missing my Bentley. Lost my mk2 Bentley last year and now i've got a new one on order.

• Here's what I put on vortex
  
  There are 4 bolts that need to be loosened. You are on the right track by having the dial indicator.
  
  I'm going from memory here so I might miss a step.
  
  Push the cold start lever in and check on the back of the pump that it is correctly adjusted (all the way over)
  
  Turn engine to TDC
  
  screw the dial indicator in so that your little dial is at 3 (where it is in your picture) and don't worry about the other dial.
  
  Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until your dial indicator stops moving. If there are any forces pressing on the sides of the gauge you will get crazy readings, make sure nothing is touching the gauge and it's shaft.
  
  Rotate the face of the gauge so that the big needle rests on 0.
  
  Turn the engine clockwise back to  TDC. Whatever the reading is, that's what your advance is. If your car is currently running (obviousy not while you are doing the timing) and you don't get a reading on your gauge somwhere between 0.75 and 1.25 you did something wrong. start over.
  
  Double check the timing a few times.
  
  To actually adjust the timing you need to rotate the crank a bit to gain access to a bolt behind the IP sprocket. There might be a few in there, there are differant setups. Loosen those bolts. At the top of the IP mount there is a bolt that needs to be loosened as well. On the other end of the IP there is another bolt that needs to be loosened. You should now be able to move the pump and adjust the timing. If you left the gauge attatched just move the pump until you get the desired setting on the gauge, Keep the gague attatched while you tighten the bolts, It tends to move a few degrees.
  
  BTW all the bolts that need to be loosened are 13mm. All these instructions are for a mk2 IDI

  Good to have it here as well for the archives. I hope someone can chime in and just sort of finish what you said about which bolts on the pump we're looking for. So the pump rotates in just the same way a distributor would turn then once those 4 13mm bolts are loosened?

• burn_your_money i'm sorry but i have to ask you what happened to your finger. My uncle lost the same finger and it looks just like yours. I took the tip of my left ring finger off in a chain on my dirt bike. sorry to jack the thread. I thought this was my uncle for a second.

• I'll see what i can do about a pic of mine. I didn't take as much off as you and my uncle have. I still have my nail.  I think his was a butcher knife cuttin up a turkey.

• Be very thankful you didn't lose it all, it gets cold super fast. That's about my only complaint though, and according to my mechanic (who lost the same amount of his middle finger) it will stop getting so cold in about 5 years, once the blood vessles figure themselves out. It's tricky to clean a fish as well
