Ignition switch problem and question
« on: December 09, 2006, 07:26:03 am »
Put a new switch (just the electrical part)in my wife's 92 Jetta td last week, problem was not wanting to crank unless the key was held/pushed just right.
Turns out the switch wasn't the problem, it's got to be mechanical in the part that activates the switch, I still have the problem.

Anyone know if I can put the new electrical part into a key switch from an older (1987) jetta that I'm holding in my hand looking at? I know the harness plugs in different, don't want to rewire to the older style plug, want to fix teh car today and not wait for new parts, especially when I have a key switch in stock............

Don't want to pull it apart again and find out it won't work.............

everything works, but the keylock won't push the electrical part of the switch far enough to engage the start circuit properly. I'll pull it all apart again and change the new switch to another housing, but the only ones I have in stock are out of the older mark 2 cars, and I don't know if the new switch fits the older housing. Can't tell from altrom if the part number is the same on early and late mark 2 cars. The switch is different, but is the housing the same?

The one I have in my hand is from an 87TD car, part number is 171 905 851

Anyone know if the 90 and up cars used the same part?
