TDI engine tech

I was going over the specs of a tdi engine I found on the net and I can't get the dimensions to add up:
block 236mm, center of crank to top of block
crank stroke 95.5mm
rods 172mm
tdi piston crown height 45mm

if you add the (crank sroke / 2)+ rods + deck height it should come very close to the 236mm block height.

If you add the given dimensions up, the total of the crank, rods, and pistons comes up to 264.57mm which means the pistons would be sticking over an inch out of the block...which it doesn't

Does anyone have any verfied dimensions of the tdi engine components???

Your rod length is wrong, they're 144mm long. The pistons project above the top of the block, the head gasket provides the extra thickness on top of the block so that the pistons don't hit the head.
'96 Passat TDI (looks stock)

Wow...144 rods with a 95.5 crank gives a very short rod ratio of 1.51.  Good for torque...but now I know why tdi pistons take such a beating on the skirts.  I've had 2 engines where atleast 1 piston was scuffed to hell from the side load
