T3 Syncro needs more go
« on: November 21, 2006, 11:02:06 am »
I have a t3 syncro 1.9 aaz, i have done 1 and a quarter turns on the fuel screw, modified the lda pin, put on a chargecooler, maxed out the wastegate screw (stupid i know), it now goes well but needs alot more.

I am after suggestions for what parts will work best, injectotrs are standard as is the turbo (k14). Because its a syncro the gearing is mad, it hits the govener in 5th at about 84mph. What turbo do i need and what off, what size injecotrs nozzles and pump head. I am getting an EGT gauge.

I know all of this will result in a broken gearbox but i will fix that when it breaks.

Sounds like your biggest problem is running out of gearing.  Spinning that motor close to the govenor will wear out the motor long befor you break the trany.

A freind of mine put a 1.6td in his vanagon with a five speed.  He ran it on the interstates at around 70 mph for most of its life.  the trany outlasted the engine on that one.

maybe you should see if you can change the ring and pinion in your trans to bring your rpm down for the speeds you are driving befor you try to get more out of the motor.

i am one of them people that would go flat out whatever the gearing so the 84mph does not bother me to much, i just want to get to 84 quicker. I accept its going to wear out quicky but i do little miles in it. To me the biggest problem is the turbo because of how close it is to the engine mounting so changing could be a pain.

do you like driving at like 4500 rpm? methinks it would be kinda noisy, and the motor wouldn't last very long...  taller gears would be the way to go.

maybe if you keep short gears all the way through 4th, and install a tall 5th you could have the best of both worlds?  take you a while to reach 84mph

The right answer is to sell the syncro to someone who is not intent on killing it.  use the funds to buy a golf td, do the same mods, and you'll go a heck of alot faster, and accelerate like a scalded cat.

Hi Andy, nice to see you back online again. :)

'Parently the injector nozzles from a GTD Golf (SB, RA engine code) will fit the AAZ injector bodies. They have a larger nozzle, so can pass more fuel per stroke.
You can swap the whole injector, but they are different length due to the AAZ having dual stage injection (2 springs) so that means swapping to 1.6 injector pipes, so I am lead to believe.
A 10mm head and rotor (pumping element) may also be of use, an upgrade from the 9mm item you have in your AAZ pump.
TDI's run 10mm pumping elements.
There are some cams available from Passenger Performance, a company run by a guy from this site (935 Racer).

Maybe the longer gears installed maybe a better idea     :P

The aftermarket gear ratios for these are poor, mine has a .85 5th gear .78 is available but not much different and then its down to .69 whcih will really stress an already weak gearbox and i will need more power to pull it.

I am thinking like you simon bigger nozzles and pump head and go from there and maybe change to the .78 gear WHEN the gearbox breaks. I have a good history with engines but seem to kill gearboxes when i start making mods.

I just got a AAZ stripped to a bare block, was going to build it and stick it in the van but the Caddy is being painted, so I will probably drop it in that instead.
I got a AAZ, GTD pump to rape for bits, GTD nozzles, 10mm pump head, TDI crank, match ported head, bit of a polish, nowt mad, passenger performance downpipe, also thinking about a cam too.
K&N Apollo cold air box, oil cooler, intercooler.. checked crank out and I think I will manage without any grinding so a fresh set of shells, rins and some guides and that'll do I think.
Should be adequate for a shop smoker I think
Already on AVO coil overs, Yoko's etc
I'll let you know how it goes on, see if the dicking around with the pump is worth it.
