Has anybody rebuilt their alternator? More specifically replaced the brushes and bearings.
Front bearing on my alternator is starting to feel loose.....................there must be a way to buy the bearings from a bearing shop and replace them before any damage is incurred to the alternator internal coponents.
Anybody done this and have the bearing numbers?
This is off a 1990 Jetta TD - should have the 90 amp alternator (i believe).

The brushes are very easy to replace. You could do it with the alternater installed. There are 2 screws on the back (they like to break off unfortunatly) and then the brush assembly just slides out. You need a press for the bearings. It's illistrated in the bentley

I think only MK2s with AC had 90 amps alts. I'm not 100% sure tho.

Anyway, https://www.1stvwparts.com/ has the front and rear bearings but it doesn't look like an easy job.

www.germanautoparts.com sells the 65 and 90 amps alts for about $100 US plus a $50 core deposit (refunded when old alt is sent back). IMO it's a pretty good price. You may want to ask them about fit on a diesel tho, they only list the gas versions (they are the same but the pulley may differ).

yeah, I just dealt with this problem.....
I had local guy who rebuilds alternators
and starters put new bearings and brushes
in mine..... it worked but it was noisey as ell....
I also removed the ac... and tossed it off a cliff....
this process was pretty easy to do........
the alt now runs off the crank ac pulleys instead....
If you are looking to do this too..... let me know....
I think this whole process.. fix alt and get rid of
ac and keep 90 amp alt was about 60 bucks us...
