looking for an old post Help
« on: November 05, 2006, 09:07:00 pm »
:(  :( I just ripped out the ac and the alternator..
The alternator bearing is kind of shot....definite play in it...
it clatters.....
So anyway, I was looking at posts like last week......and
Here is the basic gist of the post........
It was about removing the AC and keeping the 90 amp
alternator...... Now I posted looking for this stuff but,
I really don't think it was linked to my new post......
So someone kept their 90 amp alternator and
got rid of there ac... the new setup didn't use
a tensioner. Instead, he made a slotted bracket.
out of 1/4 steel... he posted pics with his measurements
for the bracket... I think it was 160 degree bracket
looked like a boomer-rang. one side had a hole in it
the other a nice slot......
thanks, Monst

viperkepr on vwdieselparts.com..........
Made a bracket to replace the tensioner concept...
When I ripped it apart today. I saw what could
be possible... it is a jetta a2 gl n/a.. so it has the
bracket that they are talking about... here.....
the alternator just swings down... and use
another pulley......
This is what I am gonna go for... it gets rid
of the ac.. I just got to fix the bearing in the alternator....
I will bring the pic to the salvage yard... see if they have
any clues for this bracket viperkepr made... I think I
have seen this kind of bracket on a gm v-8.............
will see..... tomorrow..........

Get the non-ac bracket and pulley off a VW fox/jetta/golf without a/c. When you remove your compressor for your a/c you will see the plate it was fitted to sticks out quite a ways. I believe you can cut off any excess plate that is there. I would fit the alt and the bracket before doing so. Then you will need to get a different belt for it as well. You will also need to use impact tools to remove and replace the pulley onto the alternator. Not sure if you already knew that or not. Another option is using washers and shimming out your pulley and putting a longer belt on it. you will be able to see when the belt is straight with the washers. Just keep trying different thickness of washers until you get it right. Also try and get washers that about about the same diameter as the pulley is where it meets the alternator.
