Serpintine setup

Well, Had a noise coming form the belt area..
I wa figuring it was the compressor....... sounded
like bad clutches... on the compressor....... It was
not..... ended up being the alternator.....
My plans were it toss the Ac compressor....
and go non-ac.... but also keep the 90 amp alt...
not that the Alt is toasted......... seems kind
of ridiculous.... well it be nice to have the higher
output alt........ but now I have a new thought....
I am thinking about doing a serpentine setup...
there is a kit over as zsimports..... but........ what
about.......... the 2.0L's I was reading something
about using a serpentine setup off of a 2.0L.........
Can anyone shed some light on this for me..... :?:
So it is a 1.6L 91 Jetta N/A....... belt system with AC....
Toss the whole thing and go serpentine belt system.....
and get the serpentine system from a 2.0L...........
P.S. I am gonna do more research but, it this is
total bull let me know... so I waste no more time
on this adventure........(that is the 2.0L thought)

Replying to my on speal here.....
I believe it is the 1.9L not 2.0L
and it looks like u have to use
a v-belt on the power steering.....
I would like to run a serp on
every thing.. that every thing
is without AC.......

My 97 Jetta has a 1.9 AAZ and the serpentine belt drives the water pump and alt. The power steering is run by a small V belt.

97 jetta with 1.9L that would be cool to
convert to that belt setup..... if the price
could be cheap.. like junkyard cheap.....
Does anybody know about the parts
this would entail.. :?: :?: ....(specifics).....
Can the 1.6l power steering pump
be used.... what about water pump...
etc. etc....

I installed a 1.6 into a (former 2.0l gas) a3 jetta. I picked up a 1.9 alt/comp bracket, and everything bolted right up(you need to use the 1.9 serpentine belt).
You can not use the 2.0l bracket as it interferes with the injection punp.
It is awesome as I too was chewing up alternator belts at a furious rate when this motor was in my old a2 jetta- haven't touched it since installed about 70k ago.

I installed a 1.6 into a (former 2.0l gas) a3 jetta. I picked up a 1.9 alt/comp bracket, and everything bolted right up(you need to use the 1.9 serpentine belt).

DieselPete You are running all accessories?
meaning AC and PS.....
What is the routing on the serp belt.......
(from what i understand from reading it doesn't
route around the power steering)
What years are the 1.9L used?
Is it possible to find a 1.9L with a serp belt without AC? Everything bolted right up?

(no pulley mods just use
all stuff from 1.9 and 1.6 pumps(water ps) did the 1.6 have AC

Yes they made 1.9s with no AC. The only difference between AC and non AC is the water pump pulley. I bought it from VW for 35 bucks and get the serpentine belt and v belt for the PS to go along with it.

I have the same setup as ZS, except the stationary parts are used, all of the moving parts, alt, tensioner pulley are new. I sell the kit for $325, plus actual shipping not the $50 flat rate. I also supply the bolts that you need, another expense that ZS doesn't tell you. Those bolts are very pricey from the dealer..over $30 in bolts included.

What do you do if you want a serp. setup and want to keep a/c too? I'm assuming you'd need a Mk3 a/c compressor but would the a/c hoses match up?

it's the same non a/c setup....I you want a/c you can do it...need a different belt same parts, and a serp a/c compressor. p/s you need a v-belt or to use a change a direction pulley..it can be done but you have to be creative.

first off the 1.6 did not have ac, but the a3 body i put it in to did- i didnt disconnect anything(to lose the freon charge). My conversion is basically a 1.9 setup (ps still has a v-belt), but this is the only one to adjust, and it is not a problem area. I reused all the 2.0l pulleys with the exception of the crank pulley which is a bigger diameter than the 2.0l, and the 1.9 belt. thats it.I believe that you can use tha same alt/comp bracket if you do not want to use a/c but just need to use a different size serpentine belt as someone already posted.
