150 HP
« on: October 27, 2006, 09:01:56 am »
This was a topic in the IDI section.  Someone wanted to know if it were posible to 150 hp out of a 1.6 td.  I would like to know the same about  TDI-M.  I would like to replace the v6 gas engine in my Montero and it is rated at 150 HP and 174 lb-ft of torque at the crank.

Can you get 150 RELIABLE crank HP from a 1.9?  If so, what would the torque be?  Just basic calculations would put it at about 250 lb-ft, does this sound right?

My current tranny is an auto, but at 60 the engine turns just 2400 rpm and at 70 just under 3000.  Fortunately, it is a semi electronic unit with a manual kickdown cable which could be easily adapted to the diesel.  All I would need is an adapter plate.

Let me know what you think!

Bernie

Many NA-spec 1.9L TDIs have put down at least 250ft-lb with stock internals and stock compression ratio. They commonly make 150 crank hp (approx. 130whp) with just injectors and a good chip. That power figure is very attainable with a m-TDI too. 250ft-lb at the crank is realistic w/ a stock turbo. Yes, it is reliable.

Mines electronic, but sometimes I'd rather a mechanical TDI so I can tune it to my liking with ease.

I'm hoping for 150hp :)  I've got a 12mm pump, .205s (going to change to Smog's .216's next week) and a vnt-17.  I'm just waiting on some chip tuning and hopefully the whole package will come together.  I've thought about water injection too, but I haven't found a kit that ships with small enough nozzles since you don't need the same ratio's as gas powered cars, also alot cheaper than a FMIC and stealthy.
Waiting for a bigger better diesel to come along.

an idi engine would make 150 hp for like 5 mins
then burn out the head
prechambers cant flow enough fuel thru them to be able to make that power day in/out
thats the big limiter with an idi design
Throttle cables ftw

I'll think about it come spring, for now no need it's about 5C.  I may end up blocking off the intercooler lol.

Thats very untrue. 150WHP is very obtainable and very easy to achieve with an IDI, the pre chambers handle the fuel just fine.

I've personally seen one run for more than 5 minutes at 161hp. The head is certainly not the weak link, rods maybe, but not the head.

i thought Audi80 got a (modified?)1.6 head on his 1.6block (idi)
he got about 174hp with his vnt20

1.6 CY engine, mechanical head, little porting with bigger valves. VNT20 with tube header, 2,5" exhaust, gasser intake manifold. 10mm pump and 28psi (1,9bar) boost. Pictures are couple posts above.
This is pretty much all you can get with 10mm pump.

Dynoed today. 151hp/286nm at wheels. That`s ~165 crank hp

Thanks for all of the replies!  I really appreciate the input.

Now what is recipe for the 150 crank HP TDI-M?

I am currently looking for a engine here locally ( ebay is nuts on diesel anything these days.)

There are factory TDI 1.9 engines that make 150hp in Europe.  I would say a good Giles modified M-pump with bosio race .520's would get you there pretty easily.  I think one guy on the TDIclub had an electronic TDI making 170 hp with a VNT17 turbo even.

The Ibiza FR 1.9TDI got 160hp@4000 330Nm@1900rpm, with his weight 1190kg it can go from 0-100 in 7,6sec and max 220km/h.
with a good chiptuning you got 190hp, 410Nm@1900rpm.
when you got a upgraded clutch they push it to 200hp and 450Nm
