Starter Problem
« on: November 10, 2006, 11:26:37 am »
My car has been having a hard time just turning over. All my connections are in tact and making good conection(multimeter). My grounds are good as well. Starter doesnt make a clicking noise so I don't think its the solenoid.

The starter will spin the engine, but not nearly fast enough to make compression. When the engine is warm it starts up fine. I know for sure that it is not my connections. Could it be my starter? If so, I have heard that the diesel and gas starters for the mk2s have the same part number. Is this true?

Thanks, Matt

You should check your battery......you didnt say anything about it.....
or it could be your alternator not charging the battery fully......cold engine is harder to turn than is a warm one!!

Just because the grounds appear good with a multimeter does not mean that they are capable of carrying alot of amps. I'd recommend running a wire from a starter bolt directly to the negative terminal on the battery, or at least under the same bolt that goes to the tranny mount.

A bad battery is also a likely cause

gas and diesel alternators are NOT the same. The diesel is must more heavy duty. A mk3 diesel starter would be a good upgrade to any mk1, mk2

Battery is good. What I meant by the connections being in tact. Im getting 15.6v at the starter. The battery is actually brand new last year.

I will try running a wire to the ground terminal from the starter. I'll report my findings.

Thank you all!
