Max Boost? k14 1.6 TD?

So I'm making this thing it's own thread.. I searched for it and found little...
At what psi do things start flying apart on these motors?? I can turn my boost up, and when I have say 15 psi, I like the results, but really don't want to have to do a headgasket every 2 weeks.. I have my fuel screw turned about 3/4 turn past stock, my bov is cranked all the down, but not eliminated. Will this change things greatly? BTW.. I never see smoke in the rear view.. not even when it's pinned..

My fresh stock headgasket/stock head bolts(1.6) started to leak at 22-24 psi making 110-115 WHP(lots of fuel). An old headgasket may not hold as much??As long as the BOV is disabled properly then it should'nt be an issue.

I've been running my GTD motor, with k14 at about 18 - 20 psi for somthing like 1500 miles now with no problems.
I have done the govenor mod, the lda is maxed but the fuel screw is basically stock, and I have a fmic, I do see some smoke when accelerating hard, though I think that may be some other problem which I'll have to look into...?

hard acceleration usually burns oil.. that might be what is coming out of your exhaust

The tiny k14 will giveout long before the motor will. It will only boost to about 18psi b4 it starts just blowing hot air, the standered T3 will goto about 24psi, berfore again starting to blow hot air. I have pushed as much as ~40psi when my boost controller malfunctioned with a T3, and never had a motor problem. The headgasket seems to be an iffy thing somepeople can run all the boost in the world and never have a problem and somepeople only make it to ~15psi before they have issues. If it is a Hydro head, through a 1.9 hg in it and you will have no issues for running max boost with either of the stock turbo's.

I run about 12 psi. I would rather be a little on the low side then have to worry about something going wrong. I'm going to school so I can't afford to have something go wrong with my jett

I run my k14 up to 22psi in a m-tdi...you have to remember how often/long you're actually at max boost? I cruise at 75 and my tdi needs less than 10 psi to do that...so the k14 is just humming along...but if I want to merge into traffic or pass someone...22psi is just an instant away. At 22psi I turned down my fuel screw so I'm running clean no smoke...I can turn up the fuel screw and it'll smoke and the exhaust gets much louder "no muffler". Once I pass I'm back down to 10 psi or so.

wouldn't you want less boost on the highway? seems like a waste of fuel/hp to me... for passing you definitely need hp though
i think 5 psi is perfect for highway cruising. turbo is ready to roll whenever you need it!

the turbo decides what boost it needs to go 75-80 not me...I used 10psi as an example, If I cruise at 70 it's less than 5psi....80mph is 8-10psi depending on grade...
The point I'm trying to make is you rarely need full boost and when you do it's only for short stretches. Cruising boost psi should be roughly the same for the same vehicle. My 91 jetta has wider tires, and it needs an alignment..so I'm sure that is causing some drag. You should definitely add an intercooler if you run higher than stock boost levels....especially on a small turbo, heat vs boost will almost be a moot issue for more boost if you can't cool the air properly.

Well this powerplant lives in my vanagon, so it holds at about 8-9 psi all the time.. I assume this is not a bad thing as long as oil temps aren't a problem..
My boost seems to spike once it gets past 15 psi, jumps right to 20, so I have it box controlled at 13 psi...
I assume I'm keeping it reliable at those levels... This is technically my wifes vehicle so I dont want to risk stranding her or deep sixing the motor for weeks..
