93 golf td (aaz) crank pully wobbling
« on: October 13, 2006, 01:38:11 pm »
hi.. first thread on this site.... my question is that i just bought a 93 golf td.. i just got the ip changed with a rebuild.. a  few weeks later i noticed the crank pully wobbling.. it wobbles a fair a mount, causing the tensioner to shake also..iv been also feeling a  pulsating kinda when i push the accelerator when im at high speed, the mech. said its due to the pulley.. or the crankshaft, only way to find out is by replacing the pulley and harmon. bal. if thats not the prob.. then reapir the crankshaft.. im worried hes trying to pull a fast one on me... i wanted to know..
1 - how could i tell if it just the pulley or the crakshaft causing the problem
2 - if its the crankpulley do i have to replace the harmonic balancer also
3- also is theer a thread where it shows u how to change it
4 - does the crankshaftpulley also have a direct impact with the timing belt
i mean if i change the pulley it wont offset the timing..

thanks ...

Your crank pulley is about to come apart. When it does, the engine jumps time, and the valves will hit the pistons.I would not suggest driving it any further,as if it lets go,it can ruin the engine.

The fix is removing the crank, and having it machined to accept a newer style gear which will not slip.

Do a search on this site, there is a TON of info on this subject.

There is also an updated balancer and alternator pulley to help take the load off the gear as well.

hey there, my car did the same thing and I brough it to a mechanic and they said the same damn thing. 2000 dollars later my car was still not right even after they changed the crank to take the new style timing sproket but thats because they did the work with the crank still in the engine and it was just a really bad job. Just like wyldman said, take the crank out and get it done right and with the new balancer and alternator pulley everything will work great, my car has not given me any problems since I got it fixed properly.

thnx wyldman  and insdtnoodles.. that info was great.. ill keep that in mind. in the mean time i did take it to another mech.. he told me the crank is out of true.. and he will have to machine.. i guess thats the route ill have to take.. he says its about 800 to 1000 dollars.. one more thing does the crankpulley wobble effect the waterpump.. i seem to have a leak now..

the water pump and power steering pump in my car were bad from all the vibrations. The water pump bearing was shot so I got a new one but no leaks and the bearing in my power steering pump isnt doing to well but I didnt want to fix it.
