1.6 dipstick length

I just bought a '81 rabit with the 1.6 engine. I am slowly getting the engine into figting shape and quickly realized that the dipstick stopper has become disconnected from the stick. I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me how far the stopper should be up from the end of the dipstick.  Thanks in advance.
