What engine for best mileage?
« on: September 11, 2006, 05:47:32 pm »
Assuming driving styles are all the same, which of the following will be the best for my 92 Jetta. Assume all engines will have freshly rebuilt injectors and will be properly timed. Also turbos will be IC, unless that's a bad idea.
A Giles' pump will be in order eventually but not right away

1) 1985 mechanical lifter 1.6NA. 15xxxkms on head, 100xxx kms on block.
2) 1986 hydrolic lifter 1.6NA unknown mileage. Stamped rebuild from VW
3) 1991 hydrolic lifter 1.6NA 200xxx kms
4) 1991 1.6TD 229xxx kms (not ECO)
5) 1993 AAZ crazy engine from europe. 1.6TD IP (not ECO) 229xxx kms

I would just go and check out their rated MPG but that is dependant on weight, which in this scenerio will be constant

So what one from my pile will get the best MPG? or should I sell them and get a TDI-M?

It is not really what motor but what trans...
Figure on a 1.6 hydraulic and ACN code trans or something similar...
If you can source a TDI trans or regear the 020 even better...
The 1.9 uses more fuel then the 1.6, I can gurantee that one. I have had my 1.6 Jetta go 1400kms a tank, getting a 1.9 AAZ to go 1100 is a challenge with the same gearing.
TDI M would probably be best yet though but again the gearing is very important and keeping out of the power is harder too! It all depends what your willing to spend and how you drive/what your expectations are. Cruise all day at or below the speed limit on the 401 then a 1.6 fits the bill, want to keep up with traffic/be aggressive then 1.9 is a starting point. Have the money and want both then TDI M is the route to go. Personally I like the 1.6 non turbo cause you can count on em running forever with little maintenace and get great economy.

I would personally go with the 1.6L TD, and run it in ECO mode. The 1.9L TDI however gets impressive mileage. My father got 58 MPG on one tank, 60-65mph.

Does any 020 tranny bolt up to any of VWs diesel engines? I was thinking of running a 4S, it seems to be the best of what I have.

Do you have the mythical 3.27 R & P version of the 4S?  That would be neat.

I don't know.  I've never even heard what the Teeth Count is?

I guess if it felt taller than other cars with a 4S you'd know.

I've never received any confirmation either way on this R & P ratio.  If it did exist, I'm sure allot of Diesel guys would be hankering to get it.

I have 2 4S' now... I'll have to get them running and see if I notice a differance. Definitly my favorite tranny so far
