that's exactly what mine looked like about a week before the HG crapped out totally. And that's exactly what the car I'm looking at right now looks like. MK2 automatic diesel power

Actually it cools just fine.  Stopped driving it the last week or so.  Been riding the Suzuki 250 (65mpg!)  Beat that with your rattly, smokey, stinky, vibrating diesel.   :P  (thats what my wife calls my car, but I call it the Chick magnet)

When it was hot (90 and up) I was running the AC and then, and only then, the gauge would go up above where it sits normally.  I stopped running the AC and it then cooled fine.

Note:  I read somewhere about possible temp gauge problems caused by bad grounds.  Cant remember exactly but something like voltage from stuff (like AC) ending up on the ground and causing incorrect gauge readings.  After I read that I decided to run the AC and use an infared themometer to see if it really is getting hot or if the gauge is just reading hot.  Havn't got around to it yet though.

2nd Note:  Someone talked about Algae making sludge in their diesel on other forum.  Guess mine is a little too nasty to be a case of algae?? (wishfull thinking)  Actually HG will be done if needed.  Need to get the truck out of storage anyway.  Plates expired and it hasn't been started for 9months or so???  Cant stand the 12 miles per gallon.
