Any idea on aprox HP my 1.6TD will have
« on: August 29, 2006, 10:12:07 pm »
I am installing a low milage 1.6TD and am adding an intercooler, cold air intake and a 2.5 in. exhaust. What do you think the Horsepower will be. I am hoping to get 80 but maybe I am a dreamer.

What is the best tranny upgrade from my stock diesel 4 speed?

Thanks!

you should definitely be able to see 80 hp from a good running motor.  You will need to increase the boost + fueling under boost.  That should do it.

i would say to get a taller tranny since diesels have a much shorter rev range than a gas car, i have an ff and really like, it's the same gearing as an fn tranny, but an fn has a 20% lsd, i'd go fn if i were looking to get another tranny

I've got an FF as well in my caddy TD.  I really like it.  The ratios seem just about right for around town and on the highway.  My 4-speed used to seem really wound up at 60 mph, but the FF cruises along just fine on the highway.

When you pick up the five speed, make sure you get all the linkage parts as well... you'll need them.

What about a 5 speed from a 8V GTI? The guy who is doing the install for me says he might be able to find me a close ratio 5gas 5 speed that would still have a nice overdrive fith gear.

I am interested in maybe adding more fueling but wouldn't adding boost take the longevity off the motor?

I am also looking at the stage 2 cam. Any thoughts on those?

Know what code that transmission would be?

http://www.scirocco.org/gears/

That site tells what the ratios will be and what the speeds / rpm's will be given your tire size.   You could compare it with your present 4-spd or the FF for example...

Remember that diesels have a lower maximum speed than most gas engines and that a "comfortable" cruising speed for a gasser may be near redline of a diesel engine...

As far as cams go, it seems like a lot of people here try a lot of different modifications before going that direction.  You can play with boost and fuel settings and get good results before turning to a special camshaft.  A good exhaust, proper fueling (plus an EGT / boost gauge), increased boost and intercooler will get you started.

Seems to work for me...

I entered 185/60/14 tires with a 3.89 final drive and a .71 fifth gear, then put in 65 mph (cruising speed) and it gave me a result of 2653 rpm.

Do you see an error?

It gives me that by 3000 rpm in 5th gear, car speed is 110 kph...
I have just a few days ago tested for speed at that same rpm, and the speed was 130 kph....

i would suggest against a gti tranny, it would make the car quicker, but you'd be shifting like non stop all the time.
