Wastegate adjustment question
« on: August 27, 2006, 05:08:11 pm »
I've read on the board where you splice into the turbo-housing-to-wastegate line and install a boost controller. I was thinking of an alternative to this arrangement, given that I probably won't be messing with the boost once I get it set.

Anyhow, here's the plan: On the wastegate banjo fitting, stack another banjo fitting on top with copper seals on all sealing faces. I'll need to make a longer banjo bolt, of course. Run the boost gauge off the added banjo fitting.

My questions are, how much adjustment can I get out of the wastegate on a K14 turbo? In other words, it's probably factory set at a much lower boost  (7 psi I've read) than where I want to be (15 psi). Dumb question: which way do you turn the screw to raise boost. My guess is in (to increase spring preload).

Other than losing the convenience of easily adjustable boost, are there any negatives to what I'm proposing? Thanks.

ideally you want the boost gauge to be teed off the line that runs from the manifold to the injector pump, this way you know how much boost the engine is getting, not how much the turbo is producing, although i would guess they're realtively close haha, especially if you have intercooler and just the stock elbow.

using the screw to adjust boost is said not to be the best because it makes the valve open less and increases egt's, which is not good.
