Trust me not easy to find a 5 cyl turbo diesel!
I have been searching around my area (Ottawa Ontario) for the last 6 years...I finally found a dead engine in Washington DC 2 years ago so I drove down to get it ($200 complete but pistons are dead and lots of cracks between the valves, not small either) and then I found a complete car a couple months ago in Toronto, so in 6 years I found one car and one dead engine, and yes the motor in the car runs but is dead too (200psi on last cylinder).
That said...
I know of a complete and running 1983 Audi 5000s TD here in Ottawa it is automatic and driving, just had a ton of repairs done and the guy is asking $1500 CDN (too much for an old car in my opinion and the car is way too nice just to scrape). The car has less then 75000 miles verified by the previous owner, it sat in a car port for 11 years when I found it but passed up on it and the next sucker bought it only to realize it needed a full rebuild (rust in cylinders), fuel tank, injection pump rebuild, battery, tires, brakes, this, that and everything else from sitting for so long. I drove the car a few weeks ago when I realized it is for sale again, it is slow and a bit smokey, I suspect he did not set up the pump properly cause the one I bought was similar until I tuned it up. He put rings in it and everything else it needed and now doesn't need the car, he lives ten minutes from work so he doesn't really need it. The a/c is working as just about everything (one p/w is dead). This car is really not a parts car-it is not exactly prestine show room but very nice and very clean, 95% rust free (that is rare around here!). It was painted sometime long ago and is holding very well. I just hate automatics and front wheel drive, it feels like a boat going down the road way too heavy and unresponsive. I am an all wheel drive fan and need manual trans for winter control and towing.
Now, for all wheel drive are you sold on a quantum? I prefer Audi 5000/100/200 due to the brake system and not needing vacuum, they run hydraulics and have no need for a vacuum pump plus they are much more common for parts and the bodies are very well made, no rust issues on most of them after 15-20 years in the salt belt. Much bigger car too and they had wagons also.
The only issues I am aware but have not worked out yet are the flywheel/clutch and pilot bearing issues from being automatic and now standard. I was hoping to do my swap this fall but it will probably happen next summer now as the leaves are already turning here and covering everything...and my engine is not rebuilt yet for installing. I may build a mock in the garage this winter as I have a clutch assemble and spare quattro trans sitting beside the engine and try to measure stuff maybe even test run it on the floor. I wish I had the time I once used to...
