Ok, I getting ready to install an EGT gauge. But my wallet is thin. I did some searches and a few people recommend the Westach gauges and thermocouple found on aircraftspruce.com.

I want to use the termocoupler Jake (fspGTD) recommended. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/micro8egt.php

I was thinking this gauge:

Does anyone know if they'll work together? If not, can you recommend a cheap one that will? And do I need to purchase any other components?

Thanks!

something is funny, cause they dont show the westtach  thermocouples
ive got their catalog, its in there
most k types have similar voltage outputs
id call them to be sure first
i may have the  box mine came in out in the garage ,with a thermocouple part number

awesome price,and good reaction too
Throttle cables ftw

Is that boost gauge from them as well? If so how well does it work? And which one is it? I couldn't find a boost gauge in their website.

I've heard the VDO's are not recommended. Any opinions?

Some people have said that the VDO's are not reliable, but I've had two or three of them in different cars (including one right now on my caddy td) and they've been fine for me.   The cockpit style / lighting matches the VW type gauges and they fit perfectly  in the 2 1/16" gauge pod holes.

The only thing I did differently with mine is that I got a special tee that reduces needle "buzz"  under boost.  It essentially takes out the pulsations in the boost "signal" and makes the needle rise / fall smoothly.  A number of suppliers sell this tee cheaply, but you can find it at places like ECS tuning...

That thermocouple looks like the one I got with Autometer pyrometer. Anyone know what readings should I get with multimeter from the couple? I got 0-1 ohms measured from yellow-earth, red-earth and yellow-red.
For some reason my meter does not work correctly :(

try these # s on spruces site
 4d2k
712-4d2 may be the spruce part number

those may be the same number, thats a 1/8 npt with a 2.5 inch long tip

a 4d1k (712-4d1)
is a 3/8 by 24 thread instead of 1/8

i used a 3/8/ 24 one once, cause it comes back out of the manifold easy not being pipe threads
its electrical rating on it (both) is
2.5ohms
reads 0-2100f
reads 32.9mv@ 1500 degrees
Throttle cables ftw

How do you install the EGT gauge? Where does the probe go?

in the exhaust manifold is the best(called pre turbo),which requires drilling and tapping of the manifold
post turbo,or in the dp is easier, but not nearly as accurate, itll lose 2-300 degrees on the reading
Throttle cables ftw

Pre turbo or post turbo is the best?

I take it the probe comes threaded so you can tap and screw it in.

Gauge: $48.95 part # 10-01273 (it reads down to below 100*F and so can be used for cool-down)

Does anybody know about other ways of mounting this perticular gauge?

From what I can tell of the pictures, (including hillfolk'rs) the 4 screw front mounting is either part of the housing/permanently attached...

the reason I ask this is because I have (flame suit on) a pillar pod....

so it woulnt  fit in the pod I have nor would it be aestetically pleasing :)

any input?

thanks guys

i'm thinking to buy one of these aircraftspruce, but i wanna use it on my egt meter (bought on ebay.com) from prosport.

Pre-turbo is a more accurate reading as it isn't affected by the amount of heat energy recovered by the turbo (variable).

I wanted to make a note here.  The setup from www.aircraftspruce.com that I would recommend is this:

Gauge: $48.95 part # 10-01273 (it reads down to below 100*F and so can be used for cool-down)

Sender: $23.85 part # 10-01478 (fast reacting with threaded installation good for pre-turbine)

Lighting kit: $4.35 part # 10-01229 (you want to see it at night too)

Total cost is less than $80.  Not bad at all.

Andrew

its exactly what im going to get once the TD is installed

I bought this Westach EGT/Boost combo gauge from Aircraft Spruce. It works great. My only complaint is weak back lighting. I tried a green LED, but it wasn't much better.
