Manual transmission leaking
« on: September 04, 2006, 10:26:17 pm »
I just pulled and replaced the front seal on my 92 Eco Diesel 5 speed manual trans (also the clutch and pp) due to the transmission leaking fluid.  Put it all back together and it still leaks! Any ideas where to look for the leak?

Mine leaked where the lever exits the tranny, also leaked from the CVs.

Make sure it's not engine oil; I just dealt with a pan gasket leak that dripped mostly out of the bellhousing (even though it leaked from the front of the engine pan). I put in a VW metal/rubber gasket and it's dry now.... just need to burn a little oil from the clutch disk now

It's leaking trany fluid?
Did you change the push rod tube seal? If not it dumps trany fluid right onto your clutch disc. It's the main reason I've seen for slipping clutches.
If it's leaking oil, that rear seal can be a pain to install without leaks.

Thanks for the responses.  I know it's not engine oil, as the trans "jumps" out of 5th when it runs low.  There is also fluid dripping out of the bottom of the bell housing that smells like trans fluid.
I haven't checked the pushrod seal, it sounds like that what it is.  I'll replace it and let you know.
Thanks

If your tranny's jumping out of 5th, there's likely some damage already done to it.

Mine continued to get worse over time even with the right amount of fluid in there.

It stay's in gear as long as there is some fluid in the trans.  I know when it jumps out that it's wearing the gears.  I am searching for a place to look for the problem with the leak.  The front input shaft/clutch rod seal has been replaced.  I wonder if the fluid is coming through the push rod tube?
