Sounds like the seal on the main shaft is gone.  Easy fix, Can be done right on the car just remove the pulley and dig it out of there.  Tap in a new one and retime the beast.  Nothing to get excited about.

Be carefull when you put it on so the keyway in the mainshaft doesn't cut it.
I have a specially ground screwdriver I made to remove that seal.

Wouldn't you just remove the keyway and the pulley and just work with the shaft by itself?

Maybe not if the keyway is wedged in there tightly I guess.

Good catch. I should have typed keyway slot instead of keyway.

The edges of the keyway slot can be sharp and cut the seal as it is pushed over it.
Especially if it's rotated as it slides over the slot.
I shaved a seal that way once.

I have a spare part from inside the pump, the vane holder.
It slides right over the shaft and I use it with a deep socket, to drive the new seal into place.
