VW Baja Bug, TDI Engine Choices

Hi everyone,
Appologies for asking same question.
Not able to find info Im looking for that is less than five years old.

Project is VW Baja Bug.

I want to use a TDI Diesel and need to know which years are popular, easiest to get, power upgrades, etc...

Wiring up ECMs, Tuning, dealing with cam/lifter mechanical issues, I can deal with.

I was thinking about buying an entire car, however will probably purchase complete engine with harness/ecm from wrecking yard.

Most likely an ALH TDI engine would be your best bet.
AHU from 98 Jetta is also a possibility.
