New Bosch VE pump - basic settings

Hi guys
I’ve swopped out a petrol engine in my VWT25 / Vanagon for an AAZ engine I had sitting about in the workshop for 12yr, ran it for a couple of weeks but it then gave up so I’ve rebuilt it and bought a nice shiny pump -0460494346.

It’s running lovely starting on the button but there’s very little power it just won’t pull, it drives along the flat steadily but as soon as it hits an incline I have to change down to first gear!

When I installed the pump I didn’t set it up with a DTI but it starts from cold first turn of the key, so I’m thinking the pump timing is good. I’ve swopped out the standard boost pin with the rover pin and recently disabled the wastegate, and been playing with the fuel screw but it still doesent pull.

Any ideas would be really appreciated !

Do you have a boost gauge?
What's it reading?

Have you tried adjusting the max fuel screw?

Yes I’ve got a boost gauge reads around 10psi wasn’t too worried about more boost at the moment as the engine hasn’t even done 50miles yet,it was just out of desperation the other day I disconnected the wastegate to see if more boost solved my problems, I’ve been playing with the fuel screw when I wind it in the revs come up (haven’t got a rev gauge )to a a very fast idle( throttle cable disconnected)so I’ve also had to adjust the throttle lever as the stop screw is wound right in.

Tomorrow I’m going to check the IP with a DTI, apart from the timing I can’t think what the problem is !

but the idle screw hit bottom and you can't lower the idle any more?

 Sometimes we lift the accel lever and rotate it to another spline.
 That moves the lever back to where it will need the idle screw moved out to catch it earlier.
 Then adjust the pump max fuel screw until the idle hangs, then back it off a little.

Have you done a governor mod to it yet?

Yes that’s exactly what I’ve done so far but haven’t done the governor mod but I did find how to do it last nite whilst trawling the web, looks like it’s possibly the accel lever out of index, so today I’m going to look at the timing with the DTI and re index the accel lever to the correct place and see if I get any joy.
Will post later to say how I’ve got on.

Eureka !!!! All sorted ! Reindexed the throttle lever plate with the marks 4+2 and now runs a dream, now hitting 15+ psi boost and goes up hills which is a must when you live in Cornwall,before I had problems getting it up my car ramps, there’s a lot more to these pumps than I’ll probably ever understand I spent hours moving the acc lever moving it round on the splines, but get that sweet spot and it all comes together, off for an MOT this afternoon !

I’ve got a dead F pump that I’m going to have a practice on for the Gov mod.

Just got to reconnect the inter cooler and wire in the EGT gauge.

Great to hear it was a pretty easy fix.

 Describe the governor mod you found.
 There are a few different ideas on how to do it.
